Overview

Through Project Levante ("to raise up"), SAF develops the leadership of farmworker youth and holds North Carolina educational systems accountable to providing an equitable education to immigrant students. Through this program SAF also enhances the organizing and leadership skills of 10-20 high school students from farmworker families in Eastern North Carolina.

 
         
  Program Details
 
 

SAF's youth development model involves creating a safe space for farmworker youth to talk about issues affecting them, while using documentary, theatre, and arts to achieve school success, prepare for college, and become farm labor activists.

Farmworker youth will participate in workshops on or about:
* Leadership Development
* Farmworker Issues
* Team Building
* College Preparation

To Participate in Levante

Participants of Project Levante will have the opportunity to attend and participate in:
* 2 Saturday workshops a month
* 1-2 annual retreats
* 2 College Days

Transportation will be provided iF NECESSARY.

Eligibility

In order to participate in Project Levante you must be between the ages of 12-19 and come from a farmworking family in Johnston, Sampson, Wake, or Harnett counties in NC.

Definition of Farmworker Youth/Family

A youth who has a member of their family currently working in or recently worked in agriculture planting, cultivating, harvesting, or preparing crops for market or storage.

Responsibilities

*Full Attendance and participation in monthly workshops
*Participation in 1-2 annual retreats
*Participation and development in the annual art project
