unremarkable … a term meaning ‘lacking distinction’ … the word you want to hear when receiving the results of medical scans”

When photographer Ruth Adams was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2002, she decided to document her declining health. Determined to record her journey through what she imagined would be the deterioration of her physical and “visual health” the “cancer pallor” from chemotherapy, the hair and weight loss she made an image of herself every day for a year, beginning with her first treatment. Yet rather than depicting a devastating decline, her images instead reveal a surprising rebirth.

unremarkable is a journey through cancer, chemotherapy, radiation, and recuperation, showing that this journey can be one of physical and spiritual recovery instead of a spiral into illness and despair.
