We Skate Hardcore Vincent Cianni
May 31–August 28, 2005
Juanita Kreps Gallery
We Skate Hardcore documents the lives of young in-line
skaters on the Southside of the Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn,
New York. Combining black-and-white photographs—some with
text provided by the subjects—and video footage of the skaters,
the exhibition reveals the determination, the dreams, and the rough-and-tumble
story of urban Latino youth coming of age in New York City.
Photographer and educator Vincent Cianni has been photographing
Williamburg's Southside since 1994. Presently co-editing a book
on American youth culture, he teaches at Parsons School of Design
and offers youth workshops in the Southside neighborhood, across
the United States, and internationally. His work has been exhibited
and collected in galleries and museums in the United States and
abroad. His book We Skate Hardcore:
Photographs from Brooklyn's Southside was published by
NYU Press and the Center for Documentary Studies in 2004.
