WITH SHEPARD MIDDLE
SCHOOL STUDENTS

September 1 - October 20, 2001 | Center for
Documentary Studies | 1317 West Pettigrew
Street | Durham

Photographer Deborah Willis, winner of a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 2000, is a leading scholar in the investigation and recovery of the rich legacy of African American photography. She is the author of, among other books, the widely acclaimed Reşections in Black: A History of Black Photographers, 1840 to the Present. In her work with sixth- and eighth-graders at Shepard Middle School, Willis says, she "wanted to share different experiences of how people identify beauty, from young children to older people." This led to conversations about how the students identiŞed family and about how to document beauty. How does one celebrate it? How does one see it? Their photographs accompany Willis's in the exhibition.
