Stories from the Center
September 17, 2007–January 6, 2008
Lyndhurst Gallery
The Center for Documentary Studies teaches, engages in, and presents documentary work grounded in collaborative partnerships and extended fieldwork, and the faculty and staff at the Center are a community of storytellers and collectors. We write, photograph, make films and other visual art, and produce audio to capture and convey contemporary memory, life, and culture. We work within the documentary tradition and at stretching its boundaries.
As practitioners of the documentary arts, our individual visions and approaches are diverse, overlapping, and discordant. What we have most in common is storytelling that is engaging and artful. The stories that compel us are familiar and foreign, personal and universal. We struggle with the complexities of negotiating realities and concepts such as artist, scholar, professional and insider/outsider, collaboration, and community; we are fortunate to work at jobs that invite us to explore and exploit these same issues.
This is an exhibition of our personal work.
